Presentation and Meeting
Dottie Marron and Lety Banks will give a presentation on Sensibility. We don’t use the word “sensibility” much anymore. What did it mean to Jane Austen and her original readers? Is she following in the footsteps of earlier writers of novels of sensibility, or parodying the excesses of sensibility displayed in those earlier novels? Please read the novel “Sense and Sensibility” before this meeting, as a discussion about the attributes of sense and sensibility will follow the presentation.
We will also be discussing film adaptations of the novel, from the viewpoint of adapting Jane Austen’s novel to a new medium, and the inherent challenges and artistic license involved. We are preparing the upcoming production of the musical play “Sense and Sensibility” at The Old Globe Theatre this summer.
Also at the meeting, we’ll prepare for the July 7th Special Old Globe Event. Paul Gordon has had a medical issue and may not be in town to give his talk. We still want to prepare questions if he is able to come, but this date and speaker are subject to change.
Paula Tupper is working on the December Birthday Tea and organizing a potluck tea. Bring your ideas for these events.
