Beyond the Miniatures: The Real World of Jane Austen

April 7, 2018 @ 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM PDT

Speaker Collins Hemingway, a lifetime member of JASNA, Oregon region, will provide an overview of the major issues of the Regency era, a time in history that faced many of the same issues as today: divisive wars, labor unrest, political polarization on trade and race, and technological revolution that dramatically undermined the middle class. How Austen’s novels fit within the framework of this exciting and often violent period. How the big issues affected her family and writing. Slavery in her novels, primarily Mansfield Park.

Hemingway has also published articles in Austen-related academic and trade publications, as well as literary fiction based on Austen’s life. He has spoken at Austen societies, book clubs, libraries, and universities in the U.S., England, and Australia. A holder of a master’s degree in English literature, he has spent the last eleven years researching the broad social, political, military, and scientific history of the Regency era, along with Austen’s own life and works.

His historical fiction trilogy, The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen, uses Austen’s life to provide a thoughtful, in-depth look at life for women in the early 1800s. Readers have called the series “a magical tale,” “one of the best love stories I have read in a long time,” and “wickedly clever!” Critics have described the story as “an imaginative journey of the soul.”
