North County – The United States of England

June 20, 2015 @ 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM PDT

The United States of England

How would the Jane Austen books be different if they were set in America instead of England?

In 1813 when Pride and Prejudice was published, America and Britain were deep into the War of 1812. America was unsuccessfully invading Canada, Florida wasn’t a state yet, the Louisiana Purchase was only 10 years in the past, James Madison was president, and America only had a population of 7 million. Lives for women and social classes were vastly different for American women than their English counterparts, so how would Austen’s novels be different if they were set in America?

We would love to know your opinions! Join us at our North County discussion group. We meet in the upstairs meeting room, see you there!
